Barnstable County Sheriff's Office

The Barnstable County Sheriff's Office is the main source for recent bookings on Cape Cod. Sheriff Donna D. Buckley leads the office, which runs the county correctional facility and keeps all booking data. When someone gets arrested in any of the 15 towns across Barnstable County, local police bring them to the jail in Bourne for processing. The booking record gets entered into the sheriff's system at that point.

The Barnstable County Sheriff's website has an inmate lookup tool that lets you search current inmates. You need at least a first and last name to run a search. You can also add a date of birth or inmate ID to narrow things down. Results show the person's full name, inmate ID, booking date, housing unit, charges, bail amount, court dates, release date, and custody status. This tool only covers people who are in custody right now. It does not show past bookings or people who have been released.

Barnstable County Correctional Facility

The Barnstable County Correctional Facility sits at 6000 Sheriff's Place in Bourne. It was built in 2004 to replace a much older jail from 1935. The new building holds up to 588 inmates, both men and women, spread across 12 housing pods. On a typical day, 300 to 400 people are held there. Anyone sentenced to 2.5 years or less serves their time at this facility. People awaiting trial stay here too, unless they post bail.

Barnstable County also houses inmates from Nantucket. Since Nantucket has no jail, the sheriff's office transports those prisoners by ferry to the Bourne facility. This is one of the more unusual booking arrangements in Massachusetts. It means that Barnstable County booking records sometimes include people arrested on Nantucket. If you are looking for someone picked up on the island, check the Barnstable County system first.

The facility is listed on the Mass.gov corrections page with basic contact details and visiting info. All recent bookings at this facility go through the same intake process and get logged into the sheriff's database.

If you need booking records that are not in the online inmate lookup, you can file a public records request. Massachusetts law under M.G.L. c. 66, Section 10 gives the public a right to access government records, including arrest logs and booking reports. Barnstable County has a Records Access Officer who handles these requests.

The Barnstable County public records page explains how to submit your request. You can send it by email to publicrecords@capecod.gov or by mail to Robin Young at 3195 Main Street, Barnstable, MA 02630. The county must respond within 10 business days. There are a few ways to submit your request for Barnstable County booking records:

  • Online form at the county website
  • Email to publicrecords@capecod.gov
  • Mail to Robin Young, 3195 Main Street, Barnstable, MA 02630
  • In person during business hours, Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM

The first two hours of staff search time are free. Copies cost $0.05 per page. Electronic records carry no fee if the county can send them that way. If your request takes more than two hours of staff time, you will be billed at the prorated hourly rate. You need to describe the records you want in enough detail for the office to find them. Include the person's full name, date of arrest if you know it, and what type of record you need.

Note: The sheriff's office Records Division at (508) 563-4300 can also handle booking record inquiries directly.

What Barnstable County Bookings Include

A Barnstable County booking record holds a lot of data. The basic info starts with the person's full legal name and any known aliases, date of birth, gender, race, height, weight, and a physical description that notes tattoos and scars. The facility takes a booking photo at intake. Each person also gets an inmate ID number tied to their stay.

The custody section of the record shows the admission date and time, which officer did the booking, the housing assignment, and classification level. Charge details list the arresting agency, arrest date, location, criminal charges with statute numbers, and case numbers. Bond info is there too. It shows the bail amount, type of bond (cash, surety, or personal recognizance), and whether it has been posted. Court info covers the court that has the case, the assigned judge, and scheduled appearances. For convicted inmates, you will see sentence length, start date, projected release, and good time credits.

Arrest logs from Barnstable County use a standard format. Each entry has the agency name, the person's name and address, race, sex, age, date of arrest, offense description, bond amount, and arresting agency code. These logs are public records under Massachusetts law.

Note: Some records may have restricted fields, especially those involving juveniles or sealed cases under M.G.L. c. 4, Section 7(26).

Visitor application forms are also on the site. These are part of the booking and jail process. An inmate must fill out the first part of the form, and then the visitor completes their section with full name, address, date of birth, and relationship to the inmate. All visitors go through a background check before approval. The facility allows 8 to 10 visitors per inmate depending on their security level, and lists can only be changed three times per year.

You need to register for an account and have valid ID to use it. This system is run by the Department of Criminal Justice Information Services out of Chelsea.

The VINELink notification system is another useful tool. If you are a victim or just want to know when a Barnstable County inmate gets released, you can sign up for alerts through this free service.
